Nothing changed in Belleville

May 21st, 2006

Some streets of Belleville, a north east area of Paris, did not changed for years. The small industries left Paris years ago. Many artists turned factories into workshops. They live now in quiet backyards where grass can still grow between cobblestones.

Some streets as rue Moinon or rue Sainte Marthe seem they didn’t change for years, keeping Belleville a village.

I guess you can’t park on the sidewalks, there, either, anymore! It’s good to see that some things don’t change.

For that particular picture, I’m glad you used black and white.

Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog recently!

This is a deceptively wonderful photo. The small version on this page doesn’t begin to do justice to the rich detail and tonality that are present in the larger version.

There’s a most delightful little statuette just inside the doorway of No.13, if you take time to look closely. Very funny.

Obviously, the scene is the star of the photo. But the image composition and beautifully smooth toning reinforce the illusion of a journey back in time, and the photographic look of a bygone era.

This working class district has been the subject of such a rich and interesting history. And I think a melancholic sense of that is what you’ve captured in this scene; a neglected side of the historic Paris.

Good that you’ve documented a scene such as this, while they still exist. Very nice image, indeed.
